Thanks to everyone who attended a very interesting meeting on craftsmanship in December. The Craft Readers group are meeting next on Tuesday 10th January 4-6pm in the library at CSM. It will be in the POD areas but we'll confirm the exact place closer to the date.
The theme for January is Authenticity and Craft. This topic emerged from our last conversation and applies to a wide range of research projects.
A few short readings will help us guide the discussion:
- The last issue of the journal Craft Research Volume 7 Number 2 is dedicated to authenticity. The editorial is a good starting point for our discussion (attached).
- Glenn Adamson's The Craft Reader on page 137-138. If you don't have the book I have attached an extract.
- Arjun Appadurai's intro to The social life of things, especially from page 44: http://townsendgroups.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/appadurai_social_life_of_things_0.pdf
"Whenever there are discontinuities in the knowledge that accompanies the movement of commodities, problems involving authenticity and expertise enter the picture." (Appadurai, 1986:44)
